Preparing your Car For Storage

There are instances when we need to store our car for a long period of time. In case you have an overseas trip and you’ll be gone for months, make sure you prepare your vehicle before you store it in the garage. This will help maintain your car and get it ready just in time for your arrival.

Here are some easy tips you can follow:

  • Park it indoors
An indoor parking space, such as your garage, is an ideal place to store your car. It will protect your car from environmental factors such as sunlight, rain, wind, and other natural elements.

At the same time, it is important to have a stable room temperature. If you are going away for a long time and you don’t have your own garage, you may want to consider putting your car in a public storage facility.

    • Clean your vehicle
Before putting away your car, it is important for you to clean it first. Dirt, grime, water stains and droppings can damage the paint of your vehicle. Don’t forget to wash your wheels with the KevianClean Wheel Cleaner to get rid of the mud in your tires which can cause the steel and iron parts to rust.

Clean the interior and trunk of your vehicle to avoid the build-up of dust and grime. This will prevent pests from settling in your car. After cleaning the interior and exterior of your vehicle, apply a wax to seal it off.

      • Change your oil
If you are storing your car for at least more than a month, consider an oil change. Used oil contains contaminants that can damage your engine. A synthetic oil doesn’t break down as easily as the conventional motor oil which makes it appropriate for long storage.
        • Fill your tank with gas
Fill up your tank with gasoline so that it doesn’t leave any space for moisture to enter. This will keep the seal from becoming dry. Use a fuel stabilizer to protect the engine from varnish, gum, and rust.
          • Charge the battery
If your battery is unused, it will gradually lose its charge. Ask someone to start your car’s engine at least every two weeks and drive it around the block. It will keep your car components lubricated and working properly. In case there is no one available to do it for you, make sure you disconnect the negative battery cable.
