How to Replace the Windshield

If you are driving around with a broken windshield, you are putting yourself, your passengers and other motorists in grave danger. A cracked windshield is illegal because it can crack and break anytime whether you are driving slow or fast.

It can obstruct the vision of the driver, fog up the windows and shatter the glass while driving. This is why it is important to replace your broken windshield as soon as possible.

Here are some easy ways to replace it:

  • Buy a replacement windshield from an auto glass shop
When you are buying a new windshield, do not opt for the lowest option price. A low-quality material may just cause an accident to happen in the long run.

An original glass from your car manufacturer is an advantage. It has a higher quality and better fit.

    • Get a professional installer
A good installer plays a crucial role in replacing your windshield successfully. Some amateur installers do not know how to properly handle the glass. Make sure you find a professional service shop to do the job.

After installation, check your new windshield if the job was done properly. Examine the molding and see if it is straight. Inspect the glass and make sure there are no adhesives left in the glass. The glass should be clean inside and out.

      • Remove the old windshield
In case you plan to do it yourself, remove the plastic moldings around the windshield. Do this carefully to avoid damaging the moldings. Separate the windshield from the pinch-weld by cutting it with a knife or a razor.

When you are removing the old windshield, ask someone to help you out. Push the glass away from the pinch-weld. Make sure you wear protective gloves for safety.

        • Replace with a new windshield
Clean and wipe the frame with the KevianClean Auto Detailing Towel to remove all signs of dust, dirt, and rust. After cleaning, place the gasket on your new glass and apply a sealant to the outer part of the gasket.

Place the new windshield slowly and properly into the frame. Check if the gasket is fitted well. Clean and wipe off any signs of adhesive on the glass.

Old windshields that are hazy should also be replaced because it impairs the driver’s vision and intensify the glare from the headlights of incoming vehicles. As a safety measure, if you have any problems with your car’s windshield, have it checked by a professional auto service immediately.
